Overview

A practitioner working with a given process needs to identify ways & means to improve the process. It requires you to discover, analyze & find areas of improvement in the process. Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a tool to visualize, understand and to improve a business process. It forms an integral and inseparable part of Lean Implementation Process. VSM is a tool which enables us to achieve this through process improvement.

Value Stream Mapping enables a company to identify and eliminate waste, thereby streamlining work processes, cutting lead times, reducing costs and increasing quality. It is a tool commonly used in lean continuous improvement programs to help understand and improve the material and information flow within organizations. Value Stream Mapping (VSM) can be employed to not only provide a visual representation of a procedure, but also have the potential to identify significant savings in the way in which the process is organized and performed.

The ultimate goal of value stream mapping is the creation of a future state map, which lays out a vision for the implementation of a value-adding flow in the production and design of products or the delivery of services. Setting a current value stream map and a future state map side by side provides leaders with a valuable, yet simple, method of demonstrating the need to eliminate waste in an organization.
